The Surrounding Area

Deal is on the far eastern edge of Kent, but many places are within reach. Here are a few of our suggestions for day trips.

St Margaret’s Bay
Once home to Noel Coward and Ian Fleming, a village underneath the White Cliffs of Dover. The Coastguard pub serves excellent food, plus there’s the Bluebird Cafe on the cliffs themselves. Lovely walks through the Pines Gardens or to Kingsdown and Dover.

Sandwich
A mediaeval market town with river walks and boat trips, good restaurants, annual Jazz Festival and the Empire Cinema (films occasionally accompanied by live music).

Dover
Dover Castle, the White Cliffs, ferries to France & Belgium, bluebirds...

Canterbury
Historic city built around a world famous cathedral. Newly-renovated Marlowe Theatre, annual Canterbury Festival, good shopping, plenty of restaurants for all budgets, independent Gulbenkian cinema & theatre, Goods Shed restaurant with daily farmers market.

Ramsgate
Regular summer markets, harbourside pubs and cafes, regency architecture and award-winning Age & Sons restaurant.

Broadstairs
Sandy beaches, surfing at Joss Bay, Morelli’s ice cream parlour, Charles Dickens’ Bleak House, plus a shopping & cinema complex at nearby Westwood Cross.

Margate
Home of the new Turner Contemporary Art Gallery, Tracey Emin, and a new Artists Quarter.

Folkestone
Harbour District, the Quarterhouse for comedy & new theatre.

Plus many beautiful gardens, historic houses, gorgeous countryside and Kentish villages with traditional pubs, good food and great beer. There’s even a wild animal park and a vineyard nearby. The tourist board at Deal library has more information.
